"Bringing smiles and hopes to Tin Shui Wai !"

Operation Tin Shui Wai is an attempt of HKSAS reaching out to attend to the needs of a community.

Remote and isolated, Tin Shui Wai has long been depicted as a place for new arrivals and poverty stricken families living on Comprehensive Social Security Assistance (CSSA). In March 2003, HKSAS set up its first full-day primary school in Tin Shui Wai. Since then, we have become part of the community, and are hence determined that we should do what we possibly can in the making of a peaceful and harmonious community thereat. This worthwhile community programme was further prompted by a family tragedy that broke out on 11 April 2004 leading to the death of all four members of a family.

On 19 June 2004, the opening ceremony of this worthwhile community- building programme took place. The occasion was marked by a group of distinguished artists and an interactive drama on family harmony staged by volunteers from Caritas' Family Crisis Centre.

On 24 June 2004, a seminar entitled “How do Schoolteachers and Social Workers identify and effectively cope with Family Violence?” was held with experts in the field – Dr Y.C. Chan from HK Polytechnic University and Ms. Margaret Wong from the Harmony House – as our speakers. The seminar has benefited more than 100 participants.

The Workshop on Healthy Development of Small Children, made up of 5 talks, were held from 16 June 2004 to 14 July 2004 at our school. It has been most well received of.

The Workshops were meeting the needs of parents.

Further, in collaboration with the City University of Hong Kong, a large-scale research, Study on Family Needs in Tin Shui Wai, was launched by HKSAS in June 2004. Through telephone surveys, the research has successfully reached 1,185 families and gathered a large quantity of valid and useful data. A most successful press conference was then held on 29 August 2004 promulgating findings and recommendations of the research. The study has unfolded to the people of Hong Kong a real side of the Tin Shui Wai community. It is not a place infested with family violence, families living on social security or families made up of old Hong Kong husbands and young mainland wives.

A press conference, held on 29 Aug 2004, brought a real picture on Tin Shui Wai to public attention.

Given the needs of the community, decision has been taken for Operation Tin Shui Wai to continue, bringing hope, warmth and caring to the people in Tin Shui Wai.

Operation Tin Shui Wai brings joys and warmth to children of Tin Shui Wai at Christmas time

With the generous sponsorship of the Towngas, 100 primary students from Tin Shui Wai were invited on 18 Dec 2004 to visit the Space Museum at Tsim Sha Tsui. Apart from examining the interesting exhibits, the children watched an exciting movie on the universe at the space theatre.  The children then went to Towngas's café for a delicious Christmas buffet lunch and joined renowned artists Lam Fung and Tong Ning in a series of interesting games. They also had a good time baking cookies under the guidance of the volunteer chefs from Towngas.

Director Peter Kwan is thanking Towngas for sponsoring

It was a lovely Sunday on 19 December 2004 when devoted volunteers from Asiaworks LP 119, parents and teachers from the HKSAS Primary School and volunteers from local agencies worked hand in hand in the launching of the Caring Christmas Carnival for Tin Shui Wai. The event attracted some 2,000 children from Tin Shui Wai.
