History & Vision

Mr. Taylor and a child of our hostel in 1960's.

Formerly known as the Rennie's Mill Student Aid Project, Hong Kong Student Aid Society (HKSAS) is a Christian body. The year 1957 saw our founder, Mr. David Taylor, driven by the love of the Christ, start to provide food and accommodation for the poor and homeless children in Rennie's Mill area. He was soon joined by a group of devoted Christians. Since then and in rather difficult circumstances, HKSAS has been serving children and youths with special caring needs in Hong Kong.

With the generous donation of HK$12,000 by churches in England, HKSAS was able to construct our first hostel in Rennie's Mill which could accommodate up to 60 children. The construction work was completed in 1960. The hostel Mark Memorial Home was named after Mark, one of our earliest children, who died as a result of illness and exhaustion having to work extremely hard to look after his brother and sisters in the Mainland.

In 1965, HKSAS was given approval to convert former site quarters of the Shek Pik Reservoir into the Island Hostel. The hostel is the first hostel in Hong Kong taking care of children with emotional and behavioural problems. A few years later, the adjoining Tung Wan School also came into being.

With the support of the Holland Reformed Church, another hostel for 110 boys was brought into being in 1966. It was named the Holland Hostel in deep appreciation of the church and donors from the country.

With the funding support of the Social Welfare Department and the Community Chest, HKSAS was moving towards professional in 1970's.

Due to redevelopment of the area, the month of August 1993 witnessed the relocation of Mark Memorial Home from Rennie's Mill to King Lam Estate, Tseung Kwan O. The Home was then transformed into a 60-place hostel with 6 satellite small group homes each taking care of 8 children in Hau Tak Estate. In the summer of 1996, another 3 small group homes started to operate in Lok Fu Estate..

A milestone in the history of HKSAS and a major breakthrough in terms of the service scope, the Hong Kong Student Aid Society Primary School and the Po Tat Nursery were opened in 2002. The former is located at the remote Tin Shui Wai and the latter at Sau Mau Ping, Kowloon.

The HKSAS Primary School was located at Tin Shui Wai.
